3rd ELA

Welcome back to another year at P.S. 26! We hope that you had a wonderful and fun-filled summer. We are excited to have you and your child as a member of our class as we begin the 2017-2018 school year.

Our first reading unit will help students take action towards building a reading life by monitoring interest, goals, and stamina. We will also learn strategies for monitoring comprehension as we read. Such strategies include asking and answering questions, using comprehension checks, predicting/inferring, determining the meaning of unknown words, and deepening our understanding figurative language.

As students read with us and independently, they will be expected to speak and write about their reading and thinking. Students will learn to make stronger statements by providing evidence from the text when discussing the reading, making comments, or inferences - an important lifelong skill.

In writing, we will create narrative writing pieces that follow a sequence of events from beginning, middle, and end. Students will generate and select their own memorable moments which they develop during our lessons. We will focus on expanding our writing by including thoughts, actions, feelings, and dialogue.
